living history program
When I was in 7th grade, 18 years ago, my social studies teacher had us enlist in a yearlong American Revolution reenactment program. Mr. Ryan’s living history program included marching in parades, diving into life during the 1700’s, and a three day encampment at the base of Fort Ticonderoga. Fast forward to today, as soon as I was hired as a full time 7th grade teacher I made it my goal to bring the same unconventional style of education to my classroom.
The living history program is designed to teach kids about how individuals lived during the American Revolution and Civil War era in a new way. Through several different hands on exercises, the students will be able to grasp the firsthand look at life during the different time periods. By erecting your own tent, live revolutionary drills, and wearing replica uniforms the students of Chatham Middle School will get first person experience of what life might have been like.
We would not be able to build our program without the help of grants provided the Chatham Education Foundation. With their support and the continued support of our community, it is my mission to continually build our program to help our students see living history much like I did 18 years ago.
